When you visit the University’s Research Facility at the Minnesota State Fair, you’ll find a welcoming, public-facing space where student, staff and faculty researchers researchers connect directly with fairgoers.
You may be invited to learn about a study or asked if you’re interested in participating—but taking part is always your choice. Researchers will walk you through informed consent, the process that helps you decide whether or not you want to take part in a research study. Before you participate, researchers will explain what the study is about, what you’ll be asked to do, how long it will take, and how your information will be used. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and participation is always your choice—you may say no or stop at any time without any negative consequences.
Studies are designed specifically for the fair environment and may include surveys, hands-on activities, demonstrations, or brief interviews. All studies are different; participation may take as little as 5 minutes or last up to 20 minutes to complete all study activities. No prior research experience is needed.
Whether or not you choose to participate, you are always welcome to stop by, ask questions, and learn more about University research. The State Fair Research Building is a space for curiosity, conversation, and connection—where research meets people in a fun, accessible setting.
